Indoor Vegetable Garden – Garden All Year Round

Indoor Vegetable Garden – Garden All Year Round

For those of us that live in the northern part of the US gardening outdoors is not an option half the year. But, you can have an indoor vegetable garden all year round. As you may be, I was very surprised to find out that it is possible to have an indoor vegetable garden. Three important things to know when growing your indoor vegetable garden are what type of soil to use, some of the benefits of gardening indoors, and how to water your garden. After reading you should be able to serve up some vegetables that were grown in your garden even in the middle of December!

I didn’t know this at first but when gardening inside you use a different kind of soil. Do not use garden soil. It is important to use a lightweight soil mix in your indoor vegetable garden. To make a good lightweight mixture of soil you should use ¼ perlite, ¼ vermiculite, ¼ potting soil, and ¼ peat. Another soil mixture you could use is 1 part silica, 1 part sand, 1 part perlite and and 1 part forest mulch. Now that we have the correct soil mixture let’s talk about why you should garden indoors.

Well as I said earlier gardening indoors allows you to grow your own fresh vegetable even when there’s a snowstorm outside. Another benefit of having your vegetable garden indoors is that you don’t have to deal with outdoor pest. Which leads me to my next benefit you don’t need pesticides. Lastly, gardening indoors in my opinion is a lot of fun and adds to the beauty of your home. Now that we know some of the benefits let’s talk about the proper way to water your inside vegetable garden.

The only negative to gardening inside is the watering of your vegetable garden. Inside your house your plants dry out faster than outside, which means that you have to water more often. Plants grown inside need to be watered daily. Another negative is that when gardening outside you can use an irrigation system to water your indoor vegetable garden but when gardening inside you must of course do it by hand. Lastly make sure that the container you hold your garden in has excellent drainage.

Amaze your friends with your fresh vegetables and herbs grown in your house. As you may have noticed I didn’t cover everything about growing vegetables indoors like which vegetables work well grown inside and how to find a good container to use. I will tell you that baby tomatoes work well. My goal is just to give you a basic understanding of growing an indoor vegetable garden and show you how to get started.

While cacti are beautiful plants my favorite plant would have to be the bonsai tree. The bonsai tree is a beautiful addition to any garden. Find out how one man discovered the secrets of creating amazing bonsai trees and how you can learn how too.
